Hey Guys,

Well as you all know Friday the 26th was the first day of class and, let me tell you I was even nervous. Even though I have seen the first day of class three times already the nerves that run through your body never fails. I was a bit more comfortable walking through the doors of John Jay because I was there all summer.

I saw a lot of freshmen today and I found it cute how they walked around their schedule glancing closely at the number signs. It brought me back to the first day of my first semester at John Jay. It just so happen I wore the same exact sweater for the fall 2010 and today. I found it odd because, I thought I would of thrown that away already.

Besides that, for the students that had class today I hope you guys had a great day. I was asking serval students well freshmen in particular if they enjoyed their first day. Some students where really excited to be there. And others where not so happy to be there.

And for those of you who start classes on Monday, I believe you should be really excited. Even though your really nervous and you don’t know what to expect just be excited!!! I think you guys are more then ready for your first day. You should be proud of yourself that you have come so far in life and you are about to start the next biggest transition in life.

What I like to say is,” keep smiling, keep your head up and let nothing stand in your way. You can conquer the world with the confidence and determination you insert in yourself.”

I know you guys will do amazing!!! Enjoy your day guys and take advantage of welcome week which is August 29th through the 2nd of September!!!

You guys are awesome!!!! =D

Freshmen Orientation was Amazing!! August 21, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — alexishiralall @ 5:49 pm

Hey Guys,

So as we all know freshmen orientation came and went like nothing! Even though you guys were all tired from being at John Jay so early and, then they had you walking all over the place our FYE Peer Mentors were really excited to see you!!!!

We all brought our smiley faces, enthusiasm, and peppy spirit to the gym

So, you guys actually had a lot more items offered to you then last year orientation. The bags you guys received are so much more nicer then what I had received and, you guys also got really nice shirts too. And most importantly you had your mentors running around meeting you.

Even though I wasn’t being toured around the John Jay territory I could imagine how tired you guys were. So, I am glad that some people that I actually met was as energetic like I was. I personally thought orientation was amazing especially when the mentors and I were able to mingle with you.

So to keep this blog simple and sweet that is all I will be writing and I will be including some pictures that I took!!!! Enjoy =D

Is School Really Right Around the Corner? August 14, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — alexishiralall @ 9:34 pm

Hey Guys ,

It hit me the other day that summer is coming to an end again. Where did those three months go? The last time I checked school came to an end in May and its already the end of August, oh no! I realized this when me and my family went to the mall on Saturday and we went to buy school supplies at Walmart and, just like everyone your so caught up buying school supplies. But then I stopped and I thought to myself  Oh My God is school really already here? I was just so amazed how quickly summer goes. I sat back in the car afterwards and I thought about everything I did this summer and what I concluded was absolutely nothing. My summer was dedicated to school and only school and yet I found nothing wrong with that but gosh did it go by so quickly!!

Now its time for the late study sessions, waking up early, the overload of homework and papers! On the bright side there is community hour were students can escape from school work and just chill (I am overly excited for that because I could see my friends)!!!!!!!

As of right now all of you guys have to focus on getting through orientation. After orientation there is only one more week till school starts so, I advise you guys to get your books together and pack your bag because that week will be over in a blink of an eye. All you need is a five subject book and a pen and your set (kind of unless you feel you need more than that) OH YES A PLANNER!!!!!!!! I can’t live without one and most people I know. Try not to be nervous and have your schedule printed out. I say you should come to John Jay one day and try to locate your classrooms and see what stair case can take you directly there. I remember I did that my first semester and I still do that. Actually I will be looking for my classrooms sometime this week I rather know where my class is then to be LATE! Other than that keep your head up, smile and have a lot of confidence in yourself because you and I both know you can do it!

You guys will do great!!!

Best of Wishes =D P.S Keep Smiling =)

Hey Guys,

I know that the summer is coming to an end slowly and your nerves are building up! Its time to start on a clean slate and start from scratch. Well I have to say that there is nothing wrong from starting from the bottom up. I have great news to help scare away some of those pre college jitters. The number one concern with starting over is making new friends. Well, that won’t be as hard if you come to the FYE office and meet all of the Peer Mentors!! We are here to help you and make you feel comfortable at John Jay and hey we make darn good friends too! Think about it, meeting all of the mentors and having a new set of friends isn’t such a bad deal. We all have crazy personalities and we can make your first year experience at john jay worth wild because, we are here for you!

Here at John Jay you can find all of our lovely faces in the Westport in Room 100w (“W Building 56th street 10th Ave). I know even meeting us can be a little scary because you don’t know us but eventually you will. You may be a little nervous to come by out office but I will be overly excited to say Hi to you because as a Mentor it feels great to see students actually come to visit us and want to talk to us too! We are only here to help and support you so take advantage of us, if John Jay had Mentors when I started college I would be behind them all the time just trying to get support and friends.

What might make it easier for you is seeing how excited we are when you come through the door. I don’t want to sound redundant but we really do want to make your first year the first best year you have because this only happens once in a lifetime!!! So come on in the office and talk to us because we are super friendly!

Here are some pictures taken by one of our Mentors Katherine .. Hope you enjoy them =D

Relationships Truly Have Their Ups and Downs! August 9, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — alexishiralall @ 12:12 am

Hey Guys,

We all know what it feels like to be in a relationship and even go head over heels for that person. Whether you like it or not it happens sometimes and there is really no way to control the way you feel for someone. I have to say I was in a relationship for a year and a half and it was great at the beginning but after the year I am not to sure what happened. There was a lot of arguments and disagreements. I was in this relationship practically almost the entire first year of college. When we broke up in April it really took a bad toll on me because I depended on this person for a lot. I remembered that same week I had two exams and I failed them both because I was in so much stress and I was very badly hurt. Breakups hurt girls more then anything because girls are way more emotional. What really sucks is relationships do have the tendency to get in between our school work because I know mine did for sure. At one point I started to believe that I had Broken Heart Syndrome because I had never felt so hurt before especially from a breakup. I am still trying to find myself  up until this day because I was very isolated from my friends, I depended solely on him, and I lost my own identity. I know how caught up people can get when their in a relationship, especially one’s that seem like they will last forever. I do have to say however that nothing really last forever there is that saying, “till death do us part” I had to learn that the hard way. What I found the most frustrating it when I tried explaining the situation to other people but like an outsider looking in no one would really ever understand unless they magically become you. Yeah they try to relate with similar stories but everyone is different you know!

What I would have to say about relationships and school is that they aren’t the best two balancing factors. Even though some people can’t seem to see themselves without being in a relationship, I don’t see anything wrong with not being in one for awhile. There are plenty of people out there and they aren’t going anywhere, what really comes first is school because it should be everyone’s first priority. My god father told me that young people try to find a long lasting partner where they try to find someone where they could settle down with, have kids, move in, etc and I find that very true. Some couples do begin to talk about those topics when they feel they will not live without each other. Well I find that really dumb and I have to say I did it to with my ex and I look back at it now and I say to myself what was I thinking.

Even though when some of you read this you won’t agree with me but, don’t try to rush things and then wind up falling flat on your face. Because at the end of it your the one that’s going to have to cope with the recovery and picking up the pieces. And for those of you who happen to disagree with everything that I have said then I may have to include that if you are planning on having a relationship make sure you know what you are doing. According to Kerry Moles the writer of The Teen Relationship Workbook … a makes a  healthy relationship is when two people who value equality and respect make a good start.  Moles has a whole list that if anyone wants to read it I will be glad to make you a copy, but that one seems to be the number one reason. You may call it silly when I tell you but Moles has also made The Relationship BILL of RIGHTS! Yes, a bill of rights for relationships! Believe it because it does exist. It had nine agreements that both people have to sign off on and the tenth agreement is one that the couple has to come up with. Even though the context of what these two papers sounds hilarious you would be amazed by the amount of couple who actually abide by what the paper says. But it isn’t foolish if it does happen to work for you too. And for those of you in a relationship I say make the best of it especially when everything between you to are on good grounds. On the other hand if things aren’t on a good note try not to let the good override all the bad. Fix the problems that cause arguments so your relationship can become a healthier one.

Well I hope this blog may have been more appealing to most of you because it is a topic that many students can relate to!

Enjoy guys =D
